ONE YEAR AT HILL BARN

It seems amazing that 12 months has passed since I took up my appointment as ‘Head of Golf Tuition’ at Hill Barn Golf Club. I have thoroughly enjoyed this time and I hope that those of you who have had lessons with me, have seen improvements in not only your scores but also your enjoyment of the game.

There have been several individuals who have had regular lessons and it has been pleasing to see the improvement in their games. The list of pupils is too long to comment on each of them individually so this is a progress report on 5 of them:

Jamie Jacklin: Jamie has worked hard on various aspects of his game and while improving the consistency in his play has further reduced his handicap from 10 to 5. Winner of the Boys Club Championship and Runner up in the Men's Summer Scratch Match play Knockout. With further work this winter, Jamie will further improve his game and handicap in 2009.

Barbara Simcock, Barbara ‘Babs’ Simcock has attended the ladies group lessons since they commenced at the end of 2008. She had already reduced her handicap from 33 to 25, when she recently recorded an individual score of 45 points when combining with Wendy Shergold (44 points) to record a massive 52 points to win the Hill Barn Cup . During a busy year as Captain Wendy has also reduced her handicap from 32 to 30 and I have no doubt that, with less distractions, she will see her handicap tumbling in 2009.
Connor Dixon: Connor (aged 11) started the year playing off a handicap of 30 off the Junior ‘Red’ tees and is now off 21 playing off the Mens white tees. His improvement has been noticed by the County and he has been selected for County U’12’s coaching. With hard work on all aspects of his game during the winter he can look forward to an exciting 2009.
David Blackman: David commenced lessons in Spring of 2009 after averaging 102 in his previous 7 rounds. David is still in his second series of 5 lessons and has worked hard to take on board the improvements we have discussed. In July and August he averaged 94 over the 13 rounds he played. During that time he also won the Milenium Cup

NOVEMBER 2007 – MARCH 2008

There are a total of 7 ‘allroundgolf’ pupils who have been having regular lessons for the last four months and it has been pleasing to see the improvement in their games. This page provides a summary of those pupils:

Jamie Jacklin: Jamie has worked hard on various aspects of his game and while improving the consistency in his play has reduced his handicap from 10 to 7.With the all round improvement in his game, Jamie can look forward to further handicap reductions and a successful summer of golf.

Chris Stone: I have primarily worked with Chris on his basic swing mechanics and helped him start to understand what affects an individual’s ability to make a good swing. Understanding the implications of incorrect positioning of the body in the stance has made it easier for Chris to implement the improvements to his swing. Chris has reduced his handicap from 14 to 9.

Nancy Syred: Nancy’s first handicap of 36 was allocated to her in April 2007. Prior to commencing lessons she had averaged 48 over par in the qualifying handicap competitions she had played in. Nancy’s first target was to be able to play to around her handicap of 36. She achieved this and has now reduced this to 30.

Wendy Shergold, Barbara Simcock, Barbara Carter and Sandra Murphy are 4 members of the original ladies group which started in late October 2007. Group lessons do not provide as intensive tuition for an individual as ‘one to one’ lessons, but I am pleased that they all continue to enjoy the lessons and are seeing gradual improvements in their games. Barbara Simcock has already reduced her handicap from 33 to 25, Sandra from 30 to 28 and Wendy from 31 to 30. All 4 ladies are looking forward to their golf and reducing their handicaps over the summer months.
